ABOUT

Wedge Publications is an independent, not-for-profit Edinburgh-based publisher interested in works on architecture, the city, design and visual culture. Our publications are inspired by the design thought of El Lissitzky, a constructor of books, architectural spaces and ideas, and the publishing experiments of Stefan & Franciszka Themerson, a collaborative force behind London-based Gaberbocchus Press.

For us, the red wedge is not a revolutionary fervor, but a creative urge to open out the formulaic ‘academic’ writing and publishing. It is with books–книгами!–that our double wedge cleaves an opening for difference, for marginal forms of writing and thinking with text, image and space. For us, the colours red and white are not in a combat, but in a productive tension where red signifies the energy piercing the empty page and white stands for a new space for movement of thought: espacement.

The Themersons published books that were “best-lookers, not best-sellers”. We are also drawn to experimenting with forms of writing, relations between text and image, book-objects invested with imagination and design thought. We are interested in spaces and architectures of reading and the kinds of openings for attention that books, writing and reading create. Our website is envisioned as a virtual Common Room, “a congenial place” where conversations could begin or converge.
